Do I still need to use ComicZeal Sync and wi-fi?
You don’t! read the Comic Zeal iTunes description to find out how to move your cbr/cbz files straight onto your device.
I’m having trouble using Comic Zeal and wi-fi Sync, is there an easier way?
You can set up an Ad-Hoc network, Comic Zeal will communicate directly to your computer without going through a router or any other devices on your network. The wonderful people at GoodiWare (creators of iPhone Explorer) have set up a guide on how to do it. You can read it here: GoodiWare Ad-Hoc Guide
I’ve tried Ad-Hoc but I’m STILL having troubles, what else can help?
If your device has bluetooth, try turning it off, it can cause issues in some devices and we’re getting reports it does on the iPad.
How do I get Comic Zeal to automatically sort my comics into series?
ComicZeal sorts comics in a couple of ways:
First, it looks for comics which are named exactly the same except for the number at the end. An example of this is ‘Strange Worlds 001’ and ‘Strange Worlds 002’, they have the same name except for the issue number. ComicZeal will group those two in a series called ‘Strange Worlds’.
Secondly, it checks for a tilde (‘~’) sign in the comic namet. ComicZeal takes anything in front of the tilde as the series.
You can use ComicZeal Sync to resize and rename your comics in batches, then use wi-fi sync or get the converted files from your ‘My Documents’ directory and import them through iTunes file sharing.
ComicZeal will only treat categories with more than one comic as valid.
Why can’t I drag and drop into Comic Zeal Sync?
This is due to a windows security issue when programs are running with different permissions, details can be found here: Server Fault Drag and Drop Solution
Why do my comics come out blue?
If you’re running a PC with Windows XP please make sure that you have your video card set to 32 bits..
How do I delete comics?
Press the ‘Tools’ button to bring up the toolbar, then press ‘Edit’, select the comics you want to delete and press ‘Delete’.
Do you really need to use WIFI?
All versions of Comic Zeal now support USB syncing through iTunes file sharing on the iPad or devices with iOS4. It’s very easy to do:
1. Connect the iPhone to your computer.
2. iTunes should open automatically, but if it doesn’t open iTunes.
3. In the left column, click on Devices > (your iPhone)
4. Click on the “Apps” tab.
5. Scroll down from the “Sync Apps” section to the “File Sharing” section.
6. Click on “Comic Zeal”.
7. Drop your comic files into the “Comic Zeal 4 Documents” section.
8. Open Comic Zeal on your iPhone and it will complete the import.
If you have an older device that doesn’t support iOS4 then please read on.
Step 1: Drop your comic files into the ComicZeal Sync window.
ComicZeal Sync will accept cbr, cbz, rar and zip files. If you drop a directory full of images it will treat each image as a page and turn it into a comic.
ComicZeal Sync will also convert PDF formatted comics. Make sure you install Ghostscript first. You can download it from the main ComicZeal Sync page.
ComicZeal Sync will process each of the files you dropped in turn. When it’s finished a batch you can drop more in. There’s a limit of 100 per transfer, so make sure you move them into ComicZeal before you get to the limit.
Step 2: Press the ‘Sync Now’ button in ComicZeal Sync to start SyncDocs.
If you ever have a problem with SyncDocs please make sure that your iPhone and PC are on the same wireless network and that your firewall isn’t stopping ComicZeal from communicating with SyncDocs. If you can see ‘SyncDocs’ from ComicZeal but ComicZeal doesn’t recognize it as a valid server or doesn’t transfer any files it’s almost certainly a firewall issue.
You can also try going into the SyncDocs setup and making sure that ‘Bind to all addresses’ is set, in some rare cases you may have to change the port number to 8081.
You don’t have to press the ‘Sync’ button in SyncDocs.
Step 3: In ComicZeal go to the ‘Featured’ tab then press ‘Connect to ComicZeal Sync’.
ComicZeal will download the comics from your PC and add them to your collection.
Comic Series
ComicZeal sorts comics in a couple of ways:
In the first case it looks for comics which are named exactly the same except for the number at the end. An example of this is ‘Strange Worlds 001’ and ‘Strange Worlds 002’, they have the same name except for the issue number. ComicZeal will group those two in a series called ‘Strange Worlds’. Using this method you can sort comics before they are processed by ComicZeal Sync.
In the second case, ComicZeal Sync adds a tilde (‘~’) sign in the comic name and the series name before it. ComicZeal takes anything in front of the tilde as the comic category.
ComicZeal will only treat categories with more than one comic as valid.
Organizing Comics in ComicZeal Sync

You can use the rename function of ComicZeal Sync to sort comics into series as they’re shrunk.
The ‘Series Name’ field forces the comics into a particular series. In this case all processed comics will be put into the ‘Atom Age Combat’ series. If the ‘Issue Name’ and ‘Number’ fields were empty then the original comic name would be kept.
The ‘Issue Name’ and ‘Number’ fields will change the name of the comic. They’re useful when a series consists of a lot of weirdly named comics. The number field automatically increments each time a comic is processed.
